Beware the Cheatgrasses!

It's natural to want to spend time outdoors, enjoying our beautiful Santa Fe weather with your furry friends. Dogs love hiking, but during summer and early Fall, keep them far away from the dangerous Cheatgrasses. Once CHEATGRASSES dry up their seeds become lethal weapons with their barbed fish hook-like awns. These awns penetrate into vulnerable areas of the dog - ears/feet/nostrils/eyes/mouths - and then just tunnel deeper. Check your pet frequently for awns and if one looks imbedded, see your Vet ASAP. How can you prevent this? Clip long haired dogs short and examine your dogs after every walk. If you see this nasty non-native plant, carefully yank it up and dispose of it. Let's keep our trails safe for dog walking.
Here are some photos of Cheatgrass to help you identify it during different seasons.
Here is a Cheatgrass Info Guide
If you notice cheatgrass on your property, it is best to dig it out before it takes over your property.
